Suez Case Study

Bagnall Environmental successfully delivered a complex odour control filter refurbishment at a UK waste facility, working in partnership with SUEZ to implement their High-Efficiency Advanced filter (HEAB) system. The works involved phased media removal, structural upgrades, and specialist installation of pre-seeded media – carried out in live conditions without interrupting site operations. Completed ahead of programme, the upgraded system now ensures consistent, high-performance odour mitigation while meeting stringent environmental standards.

Odour Control Biofilter Refurbishment Completed Ahead of Schedule

A malfunctioning biofilter at a UK waste processing facility has been successfully refurbished by Bagnall Construction, using SUEZ’s High-Efficiency Advanced Biofilter (HEAB) technology and technical design support. The project was delivered two weeks ahead of schedule, restoring full operational performance and enhancing air quality management at the site.

The Challenge

The existing biofilter, essential for odour control, had deteriorated due to the failure of its support structure and the ageing of the filter media. Maintaining continuous treatment during the refurbishment was critical, introducing challenges related to gas management and requiring confined space working conditions.

The Solution

Bagnall Construction, supported by the technical expertise of the SUEZ Air & Climate team, delivered a phased refurbishment. The biofilter was divided into three sections to allow for uninterrupted operation during the upgrade works. Spent media was extracted using Bagnall’s Dual Vac Unit and recycled off-site, followed by the removal and disposal of the degraded support structure.

Each section was thoroughly cleaned before the installation of a new specialist support system and dividing walls. SUEZ’s pre-seeded biofilter media, central to its HEAB technology, was then pneumatically installed using the Bagnall Dual Vac Unit. This process was repeated across all three sections to ensure consistent performance.

The Outcome

The Project was completed ahead of schedule allowing the site to reach its improved operational condition sooner than anticipated. The refurbished biofilter, now operating with SUEZ’s advanced HEAB media, is delivering effective and reliable odour control as intended.
